London Practitioner Certificate in Indirect Ericksonian Hypnosis 2010

A GHR accredited summer school for
 trainee hypnotherapists and health professionals
with Stephen Brooks
August 7 - 15  2010

Location: Roehampton University London
(accommodation available on campus)

About the Course: My name is Stephen Brooks and I am the trainer on this course. Attending this training will make an enormous difference to the way you work with clients and patients in the future as it aims to give you the practical experience of applying innovative indirect hypnosis skills with some degree of certainty. I will be covering a lot of information on this course - please check out the syllabus down the left side of the page, and while it is unrealistic to expect every graduate to leave with a real sense of mastery, my aim is that you leave with a high level of comptencey and skill superior to most graduates of hypnotherapy training courses.

On completion you will receive the Practitioner Certificate in the Practical Application of Indirect Hypnosis, Ericksonian Psychotherapy and NLP issued by British Hypnosis Research, and if combined with online academic training (our free one year interactive online training), you will also receive the British Hypnosis Research Diploma as well and you will be recognised to practice as a hypnotherapist at foundation level by the UK General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR). We offer an intensive practical training for serious students of hypnosis, trainee and practicing therapists and professionals from the caring professions, so we do ask for your serious commitment to developing your skills if you intend registering on the course. The course teaches basic and advanced skills that you can apply immediately. No previous experience with hypnosis is required, indeed it may be an advantage that you are new to hypnosis as the indirect approach is very different from traditional hypnosis.

My Biography: In the UK I was credited with pioneering the use of Indirect Hypnosis back in the 1970's  when I established British Hypnosis Research courses in more than 27 British Hospitals. I guess I am best known for demonstrations of "live hypnotherapy" with patients in front of groups of students. I find this the best way to explain what I do, it is also exciting for me as I am "flying by the seat of my pants" most of the time! Live demonstrations of therapy also mirrors what would happen in an actual therapy session - so it's a great way to learn.

Ericksonian Hypnosis is indirect and so allows you to employ highly effective hypnotic techniques as part of your therapy or care work without any of the traditional drama and misunderstandings of the more direct traditional hypnosis. With the indirect approach the therapist does not imply that he has any special power to hypnotise, instead the emphasis is placed on the client or patient's ability to naturally experience hypnosis for themselves with the therapist's guidance. I believe this is a much more repectful approach to hypnotherapy and it reduces the client's dependence on the therapist as it empowers the patient rather than disempowering them.

Who created Indirect Ericksonian Hypnosis? Ericksonian Hypnosis is named after the father of indirect hypnosis, American Psychiatrist Milton H Erickson. Back in the 1970's he was relatively unknown, but back then I came across a book containing transcripts of his work and realised it was ithe work of a genius.  He has subsequently become the most influential therapist in the field of hypnosis. Erickson pioneered the use of indirect suggestion, naturalistic trance techniques, hypnotic metaphor, pattern intervention and unconscious communication. Erickson’s approach to hypnosis is recognised universally as the most effective and successful method for inducing hypnosis and that is why I have been using and teaching it for the past 40 years. Yes I really am that old - 60 next year!

I hope you can make it to London this August as we only run the course once a year. I invite you to read the comprehensive course syallabus (on the left) and learn what previous course graduates have to say about their experience of training with me (see below). Student comments

"I am a psychologist and psychoanalyst in Paris (France) with a degree in Clinical psychology from the University of Paris. This is to acknowledge how much I have appreciated your 2008 Summer School in London. Your way of teaching is invaluable. You have summed up and compressed, without any alteration, Ericksonian learning in such a way that it now becomes quite simple to understand why Erickson was Erickson. But you went even further and added your own way of seeing hypnosis as a normal state of mind, a path to freedom and an understanding of Life and enlightenment. These nine days will stay in my mind for the rest of my life and I can never thank you enough for it. Keep spreading your teachings all around the world. We need you! Your students, will carry your light, by healing and teaching. I am proud to be one of them!" Daniel Goldschmidt, a Clinical Psychologist from Paris France.

"I would like to say a sincere thank you for the nine day experience made possible by yourself. The material, delivery and of course your handling of the group made it an event I will remember and cherish for the rest of my life. You said several times over the nine days that "this is what I want to do - teach" and it showed. When someone is doing what they do best, the passion seeps through, and it did. I am thoroughly enjoying using my new found skills in helping others - the results so far have been quite astounding. The nine days became more about the people who shared with me parts of themselves that I will treasure forever - thank you for trusting me. Your words will stay with me. A very cleverly written syllabus, extremely hard work, filled with hidden gems and performed by a true artist." Joan Hart a Integrative Counsellor and Hypnotherapist in Liverpool, England

"I went to the Summer School in London, July 2008. The Summer School covers most of the on-line material and brings it to life - Stephen takes time to explain and demonstrate the methods and tools. More importantly Stephen provides a solid basis for students to apply what they learn in a thoughtful way, by freely sharing his philosophy and experiences of life and therapy. I can honestly say that I loved every single moment and I have come away with so many gifts to treasure from Stephen and my fellow students and I know I will be sharing these with others throughout the rest of my life journey. Oh boy - I'm so busy assimilating everything." Petri Rikkinen, a Psychotherapist specializing in Art and Family Therapy in Finland.

"It’s a great honor to have worked under the supervision of Stephen and I have met the most wonderful set of people throughout the nine days, some of you will remain in my heart for years to come... Now that the course is over, the momentum will need to be maintained so we shall keep furthering ourselves not only for our own personal development, but to have as many tools in our toolbox to empower others in achieving a life they love." Julie N’Guyen, who works for a financial media company in London England.

"A huge huge thank you to Stephen for a fantastic summer school. We all learnt an incredible amount. I have all improved immeasurably over the last 9 days. I have attended a number of very good quality courses in the past and I can honestly say that Stephen is by far and away the most skilled, talented and compassionate therapist and teacher (even though he would never take credit personally for what he does!). If you are thinking of attending the course DO IT! It's awesome." David Godfrey, a Personal Trainer, Hypnotherapist and NLP Practitioner in London England

"The teachings were bountiful; my fellow students committed, supportive and giving; the energy dynamic and the experience amazing! Much love from a very grateful heart to all of you, and especially to Stephen - a truly beautiful, compassionate and artistic teacher and phenomenal man - thank you !!!!!" Helen Braithwaite, a Hypnotherapist in Coventry England

"The London Indirect Hypnosis course 2008 was an enlightening and thoroughly enjoyable experience for me. The full commitment and skills of Stephen Brooks to get the course material across was a perfect adjunct to doing the online course. The atmosphere was always open and friendly allowing students to absorb the various levels of communication with no pressure to perform but only to show a level of interest. The practical course material is rich and varied and students receiving a personal Diploma from someone of Stephens standing cannot be missed. This can give them the confidence to be the therapist they have dreamed of being." Paul McNevin, a Hypnotherapist in Dublin Ireland.

"The Summer School was a great experience and I've been using what I learned everyday... not to mention the benefits I received from the individual breakout sessions. I'm so grateful for the wonderful experience you provided to us all in London." Janet Hanson M.Ed. BA from Idaho USA, a Developmental Specialist, Assessment Coordinator and Instructor working with troubled teens.
