THE BHR ONLINE COURSE PROSPECTUS

BHR (British Hypnosis Research) is a long established training organisation dedicated to teaching health professionals, students of hypnosis, psychotherapy and personal development. We teach the theory, skills and methodology of Indirect Hypnosis combined with Ericksonian Psychotherapy and NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming). The comprehensive BHR curriculum is based on the unique combination of these three cutting edge disciplines and leads to the award of the International BHR Certificate in Indirect Hypnosis, Ericksonian Psychotherapy and NLP.

Offering free weekly online tuition the course has been designed for serious students of hypnotherapy demanding an up to the minute training in these fields, with latest developments being added on an ongoing basis. Many Graduates are now working as Hypnotherapists in private practice or utilize their hypnosis skills as an adjunct to their profession as Doctors, Dentists, Nurses, Psychologists and Social Workers etc.

BHR was founded by British Hypnotherapist Stephen Brooks in 1979 to provide an ethical and professional vocational training and qualification to people seriously interested in training in this rewarding field. Brooks has long been a pioneer in the hypnotherapy field. He was the first therapist to teach Ericksonian Hypnosis in Europe, the first to teach Indirect Hypnosis in hospitals throughout the UK, the first to offer an online one year hypnosis course and now the first person worldwide to give an entire one year course away completely free of charge. By joining this course you will become part of a highly respected community of therapists trained by an established British training institution with a history of offering high quality courses for more than 20 years.

The online course has evolved from the respected training programmes established by British Hypnosis Research in many British hospitals and universities during the 1980’s and 90’. BHR trained over 4000 graduates from over 40 different countries on its “live” courses at that time and the unique approach developed by the organization established BHR as pioneers in the hypnotherapy training field.

Most online distance learning courses are based on a linear series of uninspiring static web pages. Our courses are very different - they are highly interactive. We believe that people need constant stimulation to feel motivated to study online which is why we have built our courses using the most advanced interactive software. This Certificate course has been designed using the same distance learning software as the Open University and BHR is an innovator in the field of online hypnosis training having based its courses on actual therapy sessions with patients which students watch online. This is followed by an in depth video analysis of each therapy session.

We have made the academic part of our courses highly interactive so that you do not feel alone in your studies. You will feel motivated to reach your full learning potential via the social constructivist approach that we use. Our courses guarantee an engaging online learning experience with online workshops that enable you to collaborate with other students on assignments, share ideas and evaluate each others work. In addition there are online video lectures, demonstrations and forums where you can rate forum posts on their relevance or insight, as well as 6 live chat rooms and live Skype video conferencing with other students, assignments, polls, quizzes and the opportunity to upload, update and resubmit coursework and share work with the other students.

The course has been written by world renowned hypnotherapist Stephen Brooks, a pioneer in the field of Indirect Hypnosis and he has developed the most advanced, cutting edge training in hypnosis currently available worldwide. So not only will your training experience be one of the most exciting online learning experiences available, the course curriculum is also based on the most innovative and cutting edge techniques in hypnotherapy today, and its free of charge.

BHR Trainer – Stephen Brooks

Stephen Brooks is acknowledged as one of the foremost authorities on creative hypnotherapy in the world. He is one of the most highly respected experts in the field and is best known for his fascinating "one to one" therapy demonstrations, which form an integral part of the teaching on this course. It is his insistence that students should learn hypnotherapy directly from watching actual live therapy sessions with real patients that make this course very different from others.

Brooks is one of the few trainers able to work therapeutically with patients producing fast and dramatic changes while simultaneously teaching students what he is doing, and you will witness this time and time again. Brooks has the ability to break down his hypnotherapy sessions into simple to learn techniques and skills so that each student is able to learn effectively. You will see him do this during each therapy session.

Brooks was the first person to introduce Ericksonian Hypnosis into Europe over 25 years ago and he has been designing and presenting courses in teaching hospitals and Universities for many years. In the 1970’s hypnosis was only used by a few Doctors, Dentists and Psychologists. Brooks’ courses changed that, and he is now credited with the acceptance of Indirect Hypnosis throughout the caring professions in the UK. He is the author of many publications and training resources on Indirect Hypnosis.

Brooks has always believed that to be really effective, Hypnosis and NLP should be used together and he stands alone in delivering his online Certificate course reflecting over 30 years of research and continual development. Brooks offers 'break through' techniques with proven and documented records of helping people overcome lifelong difficulties. As a recognised authority on modern hypnosis, in 1991 recordings of his work were preserved in the British Sound Archives.

Practical Skill Based Course

Indirect Hypnosis combined with Ericksonian Psychotherapy and NLP is recognised as one of the most effective and rapid ways of helping people achieve desired change in their behaviour and lives. This unique approach was developed by Brooks from the work of Milton H Erickson, an American Psychiatrist recognised as the world's leading authority on hypnosis and innovative psychotherapy. Because of Brooks’ outstanding contribution to the field, few courses today can offer the same degree of expertise regarding Erickson’s work. Throughout the training, Brooks constantly places emphasis on the ethical and practical application of the skills.

Indirect Hypnosis

On BHR courses you will learn to hypnotise patients indirectly in a non-authoritarian way utilising their beliefs, interests and personality to help them successfully enter the hypnotic state. BHR courses cover all of the principles of Indirect Hypnosis including language skills, hypnotic induction, hypnotic implication, pattern intervention and tasking as applied to a wide range of psychological, behavioural and pathological problems.

Learning to experience hypnosis for yourself will also open up the creativity of your unconscious mind and help you to resolve any life long issues that have stopped you from realising your full potential.

Ericksonian Psychotherapy

Erickson’s contribution to psychotherapy is well documented and his approaches are now being used throughout the caring professions world wide. Brooks has continued to refine and update Erickson’s approach to match the changing needs of therapists and patients in the 21st century and his courses are at the cutting edge of hypnotherapy training both academically and as practical skill based training.

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)

NLP was originally developed from detailed observation of innovative therapists such as Milton Erickson, Virginia Satir and Fritz Perls. By studying these therapists, NLP identified communication techniques, strategies and skills that could be re-packaged and taught to others. NLP today is taught in a wide range of professions such as therapy, business, sales, education, sport, law and personal development.

Because of this broad spectrum of applications, many NLP courses do not specialize in teaching NLP specifically to therapists. Students of these courses often feel unequipped to actually work therapeutically with patients. BHR specializes in teaching NLP to therapists and health professionals. For those students already trained in NLP, our course represents an opportunity to considerably deepen your experience of NLP within the specific context of Indirect Hypnosis and Ericksonian Psychotherapy.

Online Course Structure

BHR Courses are designed around ethical and practical skill based monthly training Modules and our highly successful course structure ensures that you will be exposed to a variety of different learning styles.

You are expected to study ten Course Units each month. Each Course Unit represents one new approach, technique, strategy or skill that has to be learnt. Each monthly Module also contains a streaming video of a therapy session followed by an in depth video analysis of the approaches, techniques, strategies and skills seen in the video.

You are assessed weekly on an ongoing basis as you participate in the online discussion forums, exercises and assignments based on the lessons or videos. This gives you the opportunity to integrate everything that you learn and monitor your progress each week. The course is evolving continuously to keep in line with new developments in the field and Course Units are updated on an ongoing basis.

The unique academic format of the online course allows you to study at your own pace from home while feeling an integral part of a community of students sharing the same empowering learning experience. In addition to the main teaching Modules BHR has created an opportunity for significant interaction with other students via the online chat rooms and Skype video conferencing. Many of our students are already working as therapists or health professionals and bring to the training a wide range of skills and experience. So you will also benefit from the expertise of your peers who have a diverse range of professional skills. In addition to the online training, you can develop your skills further, and upgrade your Certificate to a Practitioner Diploma, by attending one of Stephen Brooks’ live courses. These run over 9 consecutive days in different international locations approximately 4 times a year.

Recommended Study Time

The structure of the course allows you to move around within the Course Units and return to Units that you may not have completed, although, for maximum interaction, it is best to study the same Units that other students are studying during that month. Streaming videos of therapy sessions vary in length from 1 to 2 hours and the video analysis of the session is usually at least double the length of the session. So each month you will be required to watch about 4 – 6 hours of video demonstrations.

Each Course Unit will require an average of 2 hours of home study per week but there is no restriction to how much time you spend with your studies. The course has been designed to be as flexible and as interactive as possible so there is ample opportunity to discuss the Units with other students online as often as you like and we encourage this. You can take longer than one year to complete the course if this is needed. The Certificate is awarded when you have reached the required number of grades regardless of when you achieve this, even if it takes more than one year.

Therapy Demonstrations

A unique aspect of your online training is having the opportunity to witness many full-length therapy sessions of Indirect Hypnosis, Ericksonian Psychotherapy and NLP with real patients. Stephen Brooks will demonstrate the course skills with genuine patients throughout the course and you will be able to watch these sessions in streaming video format regardless of which time zone you live in. The sessions are permanently online for you to return to at any time.

Our goal is that by the end of the course you will be able to recognise the skills, techniques and principles being applied during the sessions, understand their structure and be able to apply them yourself.

Optional One to One Supervision

BHR introduced Supervisors as an adjunct to the courses at St Anne’s Hospital in London in 1992 and students found it very helpful, so we have continued this option with the online course. The opportunity exists for ongoing one to one personal supervision with BHR Supervisors during your training. Although this isn’t required as part of the course, some students may feel that they want to maximise their opportunity to learn while on the course. Many Graduates decide to continue their supervision, or seek supervision, after they have finished their training. This can be useful when first starting out in practice. Supervision is by phone and / or web cam or in some cases direct contact if we have a supervisor living in your area. One to one supervision is optional and by private arrangement with a supervisor so is not part of the course. Supervisors charge a fee based on what they charge for a one to one therapy session but BHR makes no income from Supervision. All current Supervisors are experienced therapists and were trained by BHR at least 10 years ago and have been in practice for at least the same amount of time.

Course Materials

All course materials are free and downloadable or are available online. Additional resource material is available from the BHR Archives in the form of free audio recordings, transcripts and eBooks.

Legislation

British Hypnosis Research is actively supporting initiatives to legislate the use of hypnosis and establish international standards of practise for health care professionals and Hypnotherapists in private practice. Through our association with other Associations we are actively involved in determining the standards for Health Care with relation to Hypnosis in the UK and similar standards in other countries worldwide. This is a long and complicated process as legislation can vary from country to country.
