Course Fee: £1950.00 this includes accommodation, breakfast, local travel and all field trips.
A £195.00 deposit secures your place on the course. Balance required one month before the retreat. Alternatively for students who may find it easier to spread their payments over 10 months we have an installment plan. This even allows you to attend the course and complete payment after the course has finished.
How To Pay: The fee can be paid by Paypal. We can accept a deposit followed by the balance or a deposit and 10 monthly installments. With Paypal you can also pay in your own currency.
Students should book their own flights. The price of flights is not included in the Course Fee. As a guideline, direct flights from the UK to Chiang Mai via Bangkok are around £630 approx, from the USA $850 approx, from Europe 1000 Euro approx and from Australia AU$720 approx.
These flight prices are approximate and are based on the rate charged by Thai Airways for direct flights to Thailand in 2009, but these may increase closer to the time. It may be possible to buy cheaper (non-direct) flights with other airlines so it is worth shopping around. Participants must book and pay for their own flights.
Flights leaving your home on Saturday will arrive on Sunday ready for the first day of training on Monday. After 5 days training the weekend will be free time and I can advise about excursions. The course recommences on the Monday through to Friday. Flights then leaving Thailand on the following Saturday will arrive back home on the Sunday.
Location: A Buddhist Temple in Chiang Mai Thailand.
For those participants wishing to stay three weeks I recommend that you spend the additional 7 days on one of Thailand's tropical islands. I recommend Koh Tao in the Gulf of Thailand. It is beautiful, quiet and safe. Accommodation on Kho Tao can be booked privately over the internet, just search for Kho Tao in Google. Alternatively you may prefer to visit Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, China, Burma, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Bali or the Philippines – all only 2 - 4 hours away.
Schedule: The schedule is subject to change but most days follow the same timetable. Each day has a different theme / topic related to Non-Attachment. Each day comprises teaching in the morning and the practical application of the teaching in secret locations in the afternoons. Morning teaching is from 9.00am - 12.00pm followed by lunch. In the afternoons you will put into practice what you have learned in the mornings on field trips to the mountains, villages, other locations. Weekends are free time. I will recommend places to go in the evenings / weekends.
Accommodation: The Hotel is in Chiang Mai town. Rooms are mostly twin / doubles but each person has their own air conditioned room. Breakfast is included. The Hotel is close to the Temple. Shopping and nightlife easily accessible.
Clothing: Lightweight cotton. If students wish, clothing and shoes can be bought in Thailand for a fraction of the price you would pay back home – so bring an empty suitcase!
The teaching is in an actual Buddhist Temple each morning so it is important that women cover arms and legs when in the Temple. So light loose non-sexual cotton is ideal. Simple colours are better so as not to excite the monks.
Shorts and tee shirts are good for the afternoons when we are out on trips. Long sleeves will help prevent sunburn. There are cheap laundries who will take care of everything, so you needn't bring many clothes. Flip flop / sandals / easy to remove shoes are ideal as you will remove shoes when entering Temples. Department stores in Chiang Mai close around 9.00 pm. The night market closes around 11.00pm - all are accessible within a 15-minute taxi ride of the hotel. Smart casual light cotton clothing is good for restaurants in the evenings. Mosquito spray / sunscreen can be bought in Chiang Mai.
Food: Meals are not included (except breakfast) but restaurants are very cheap. Many Thai people eat out every day and don't bother cooking at home. Thai food is cheapest so forget about paying £60.00 for a 3 course Thai meal back home - you can get the same thing in Thailand for less than £5.00. Noodles and street food (highly recommended) will cost about £1.00 or less. Western food is more expensive but still cheaper than back home - Chiang Mai has some excellent French and Italian restaurants.
Travel: All travel to and from the hotel to the temple and other course locations are included in the price of the course. Cost of travel in the evenings and weekends is not included. Transport around town in the evenings is cheap and consists of the following: Red Song Tao - around £1.00 or less per person anywhere in town. There are hundreds of these and they can be flagged down on the street. Tuk Tuk - around £3.00 total for up to 3 people anywhere in town. There are hundreds of these and they can be flagged down on the street. Air conditioned Taxi - around £6-10 total for up to 4 people anywhere in town. The hotel can call one of these for you and you can arrange for the driver to pick you up later.
Airport Arrival: The Hotel is only 10 minutes from the airport. Just ask for the Tadkham Village Hotel.
Tipping: Tipping is expected in restaurants and hotels, normally about 10%. You do not tip at food stalls, noodle shops or food halls. You do not tip Song Tao, Tuk Tuk or Taxi drivers.
Haggling / negotiating prices: Negotiating the purchase price of something is acceptable at markets only and should be with a smile and certainly not aggressively.
Communicating: Thai people smile a lot, even when angry - you should smile at everyone you meet. Public displays of aggression are looked down on. Most Thais you will meet will speak some English - except in some of the more remote areas we will visit.
Vaccinations: We do not visit any Malarial areas so vaccinations are optional.
Visas: Visas are not required for stays of less than 3 weeks but your passport must be valid at least 6 months.
Climate: The weather is dry with temp from 32 - 35 C.
